Yes, absolutely right. An experienced photographer chooses the lens first. And then, they select a system for lens – a camera and a flash. However, an inexpert photographer also somehow chooses a system. For example, first they buy a camera, and then lenses. In both cases, the result is the same: one system means
lens plus camera body. Lenses and cameras of different systems are not compatible with each other. The exception is some older lens mounts. For example, Leica Thread Mount or M42. These are old standards from the far past, when the lens and the camera had minimum information exchange between each other and these standards were open for copying.
However, the total number of excellent lenses of this standard is in the millions. And there are a lot of them at the secondhand market.
